New WK JETMAX 250 Hits the Streets
April 2011
  First Test by Andy Foulkes

The Jetmax 250 is powered by a sophisticated electric start 249cc four-stroke motor, boasting a four-valve cylinder head, single overhead camshaft, a balance shaft and BOSCH electronic fuel injection. This is married to a fully automatic, constantly variable transmission, which makes it a true 'twist-and-go' machine.

The large diameter, twin hydraulic front disc brakes with twin-piston callipers and single hydraulic rear disc brake are the sort of specifications you might expect on a quality sports motorcycle.

The large diameter, 15 inch front wheel and 14 inch rear wheel, are true 'Maxi Scooter' class and certainly help the Jetmax to roll over the worst undulations and bomb holes in the nation's rapidly deteriorating tarmac.

The Jetmax offers exceptional storage capacity, with the under-seat storage area easily taking a full face crash helmet and a bag full of groceries. There is also another lockable storage space under the handlebars, which can easily accommodate gloves, keys, sunglasses, phone, etc.. This storage space also has a USB connection to plug into your MP3 player, which then plays though the speakers in the front console. Or you can just tune into the standard fitment radio and pick a station.

Scooters may be viewed as short distance commuters by some, but today's modern scooters are capable of far more than a dash to the shops and my first ride on the Jetmax was a wet and windy 270 mile ride from WK's base in Lincolnshire back to the south coast. This took in the A1, M11, M25 and the Dartford Bridge under threat of closure due to high winds and the twisty A and B roads of Kent and East Sussex - and it did it all with ease in under four and a half hours. Bearing in mind that it was brand new and running in, it managed around 70mpg, which, considering there was a headwind as well for most of the journey, was a more than satisfactory figure which will certainly be bettered as the engine loosens up. Everything worked well in grotty weather conditions and although brand new, it cruised at the legal limit with plenty more to come. A very impressive and actually very enjoyable first outing.

That first ride convinced me that touring is a definite option on the Jetmax and a trip to the south of France is now being planned. I'll report back from the Med!
